Because Banning them Makes You Want them More

15th September 2006

To celebrate Banned Books Week 2006 (September 23-30), Google has set up a special page on Google Book Search listing books that have been challenged or banned through the years.

I’m rather surprised at some of the books listed, and not so much about others. If you’re interested in why some of these books drew the attention of the uptight book-banning types, there is a handy list provided by the American Library Association. Some of the reasons, such as for Aldous Huxley’s Brave New World, are rather humorous.

I’m definitely going to have to add some of these to my reading list.

Have you read any of these books? I’ve read: 1984, Catcher in the Rye, One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, The Call of the Wild, and The Jungle from what I can remember. Most being required reading in high school! I’ve also seen the movie version of a lot of the others on that list.

I’ve read some, but I refuse to answer exactly how many on the grounds that it might make me sound way more uneducated than I’d like to be.
